CVSD Highlights Special Backyard Services

(12/01/05)

You may be eligible for an exemption from curbside placement of recycling, greenwaste, and garbage carts.

Waste Management of Alameda County (WMAC) provides special manual carryout services, “Side yard/Backyard service”, for single family customers, and multi-family customers with individually billed rollout cart service, who are determined to have difficulty doing so themselves due to physical or mental limitations or disabilities at no additional cost to the customer.

WMAC and customers requesting an exemption for Side yard/Backyard service will determine a reasonable location for carts in order to facilitate collection. Eligible customers will be required to attach a copy of a letter from the requesting customer’s doctor, or a certificate from the motor vehicle department, to the request form.

Multi-family units that use carts and find that carts are cluttering sidewalks or driveways may discuss the Side yard/Backyard service option with their property manager. The monthly rate for convenient Side yard/Backyard service for otherwise able customers is $9.40. For a request form or for more information, please call Waste Management of Alameda County at (510) 537-5500.

Sports Equipment Given Second Chance!

(11/04/05)

Generous residents cleared their closets and garages and brought used sports equipment to Castro Valley Sanitary District during Sports Equipment ReUse Week 2005. The District-sponsored event gave residents an opportunity to practice reuse while supporting charities.

Collected soccer equipment including, cleats, uniforms, soccer balls and flags will be shipped by Castro Valley Youth Soccer League (CVYSL) to Costa Rican soccer players, while the remaining items, ranging from buckets of softballs to golf clubs, will be donated to Special Olympics of Northern California to be used for training or in competition.

Planning has commenced for next year’s reuse event to be held during the week of America Recycles Day. The event will support Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe Program where used tennis shoes are collected and turned into synthetic sports fields.

Thank you to District residents and their families for their participation in Sports Equipment ReUse Week 2005.

Go beyond the pail and enter to win Dinner for Two at a local restaurant!

(11/02/05)

Have you seen your green food scrap pail lately? Distributed to Castro Valley Sanitary District (CVSD) households in 2001, the pails were designed to contain food and food soiled paper prior to disposal into the greenwaste cart. While many residents still utilize the pail, some “go beyond the pail” and use compostable containers such as ice cream cartons and paper grocery bags to capture their food scraps.

Through the “Pail Bring-Back” program CVSD will collect unwanted pails from residents that have “gone beyond the pail”. Collected containers will be sanitized and re-distributed to residents in need of a food scrap pail. Participating residents will be entered into a drawing to win “Dinner for Two” to one (1) of three (3) participating local restaurants - Baker’s Square, Don Jose’s or Palomares Café.

Get to the core of food scrap recycling and give your unwanted pail a new lease on life by returning it to the Castro Valley Sanitary District, 21040 Marshall Street, Castro Valley, between the hours of 7:30 am and 4:30 pm, Monday - Friday. When you bring your pail to the District offices, you will be eligible to enter into the restaurant gift certificate drawing. Quarterly drawings will commence February 15, 2006. Forms and pails for entry into the February drawing are due in the District offices by 4:30 p.m., February 15, 2006. Subsequent drawings will be held on May 15th, August 15th and November 15th 2006.

For more information, visit www.cvsan.org/pailbringback.htm or contact (510) 537-0987 or (510) 537-1500.

Computer Recycle Round-Up Day

(08/04/05)

Castro Valley Sanitary District would like to thank Castro Valley residents for participating in this year’s Computer Recycle Round-Up on Saturday, July 16th. Approximately 1,150 vehicles made their way to the event, dropping off nearly 130,000 pounds of electronic waste. While most of the outdated electronic waste was transported to a local recycling facility where the plastic, glass, and metal were recycled and the hazardous materials properly disposed of, the newer pieces were taken by a nonprofit organization, Computers in Education, to be refurbished and donated to Bay Area schools. Over 95% of the electronic waste collected was reused or recycled, diverting nearly 62 tons of waste from a landfill.

In addition to promoting responsible recycling of electronic waste, this year’s event also focused on educating the community’s “do-it-yourself” oil changers on proper used motor oil and filter recycling. Nearly 450 used oil jugs and filter bags, used to contain used motor oil and filters for curbside collection, were distributed to residents as they exited the event. If you or someone you know would like a used motor oil jug and bag, they are available at the CVSD offices, 21040 Marshall Street, Castro Valley.

The response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive and it is clear that District residents want to “do the right thing” by responsibly recycling their electronic waste and used motor oil and filters. Thank you for your support and participation in the 2005 Computer Recycle Round-Up.

''Aloha'' Much Closer for CVHS Cross-Country Runners Club

(06/13/05)

Running competitively in Hawaii isn’t such a far-fetched idea any longer for the Castro Valley High School Cross-Country Runners Club, after they received their benefit proceeds from Castro Valley Sanitary District (CVSD)’s Project EARTH 2005 5k Run/Walk. Runners Quanina Quan, Katie Parr, and Katelyn Phillips, excitedly accepted a $5,300.00 check from Project EARTH Coordinator Naomi Yee on Tuesday, June 7, 2005 at CVSD’s Board of Directors meeting. Quan, Parr, and Phillips acted as student coordinators on behalf of the Runners Club, and will also be competing in September 2005 in the Iolani Invitational in Hawaii. Proceeds help to offset the costs of approximately 30 high school runners who will be participating. Also present were overall fastest male and female runners Andrew Chan, and Sue Smith, who received their recycled glass awards.

Grants Are Here Again!

(06/10/05)

Castro Valley Sanitary District is pleased to announce the continuance of the Lateral Replacement Grant Program (LRGP), scheduled to start July 1, 2005 in the amount of $50,000. The District is offering financial assistance to replace your entire defective lateral at 50% of the approved cost, up to a maximum reimbursement of $2,000 per building lateral.

Residents may see advertisements in local papers or flyers from contractors promoting the program. These advertisements may be misleading or confusing to residents who are interested in participating in the LRGP. The Castro Valley Sanitary District is here to attempt to demystify the LRGP to its customers.

1. Only Castro Valley Sanitary District residents may submit an application to the District for consideration for the program. Some contractors will tell you they can submit the application but they cannot.

2. Applications must be submitted with at least three (3) bids from contractors. If the bids seem too high to District staff you may be advised to obtain additional bids. It is recommended that you do not share price information between contractors to avoid confusion and misconduct.

3. An inspection of the existing lateral is required prior to funds being obligated to a resident. You are to contact the District to schedule an inspection to observe a contractor’s video inspection of the lateral no sooner than July 1st. You may request the District perform the video inspection of the lateral, however; this may take 4 to 6 weeks to schedule.

4. Finally, a resident should not enter into any type of agreement with a contractor until receiving written confirmation from the District that funds have been obligated for their project.

For further information, please contact the Castro Valley Sanitary District, 21040 Marshall Street, Castro Valley, (510) 537-0757; or visit our website at www.cvsan.org.
