Sanitary District to Host a Solid Waste Services Town Hall Meeting

(12/19/06)

Want expanded services? Unhappy with a current service? This is your opportunity to let Castro Valley Sanitary District know how you feel about your recycling, garbage and greenwaste services currently provided by Waste Management of Alameda County, Inc.

On Thursday, January 11th at 7:00 p.m., at District offices at 21040 Marshall Street in Castro Valley, a Solid Waste Services Town Hall meeting will take place to hear your likes, dislikes and concerns as the District begins negotiating for the next solid waste contract to become effective in 2009.

We hope to incorporate new ways to address these regulations in the new contract to accommodate the changing times.”

You’re encouraged to attend the Town Hall meeting. However, if you are unable to attend and wish to have your comments heard, please email them to naomi@cvsan.org, write to Castro Valley Sanitary District, 21040 Marshall Street, Castro Valley, CA 94546, or call (510) 537-0757.

Sanitary District Landscape Gets Bay-Friendly Renovation

(6/13/06)

From a green building to a green business and now to a bay-friendly landscape, Castro Valley Sanitary District (CVSD) continually strives to exhibit environmental stewardship in the community. If you’ve been to the District offices recently, you may have noticed a change in landscape. This past April, ground broke for the District’s bay-friendly landscape renovation project. Completed in May, the new landscape incorporates all seven bay-friendly landscaping principles:

1. Landscape Locally
2. Landscape for less to the Landfill
3. Nurture the Soil
4. Conserve Water
5. Conserve Energy
6. Protect Water & Air Quality
7. Create & Protect Wildlife Habitat
Highlights of the new landscape include:

Native plants - 86% of selected plant species are native to California; 55% are local to the San Francisco Bay Area. Native plants flourish with less water, fertilizers and maintenance.

Biodiversity - With 42 distinct plant species, the landscape is designed to maximize biodiversity resulting in reduced pests and increased ability for plants to resist disease.

Compost - 10 yards of organic compost, produced with Castro Valley residents’ food scraps, were used to amend the soil. Compost fosters a diverse, fertile, disease suppressive soil and improves soil structure, aeration and water holding capacity.

Water Conservation - By eliminating the lawn, it is estimated that 7,300 gallons of water will be saved each dry season. Additionally, a “smart” irrigation controller that monitors current weather conditions was installed to ensure appropriate irrigation.

Bioswale - An infiltration basin, or “bioswale”, was created to infiltrate storm water into the soil. This practice recharges ground water, removes pollutants from water and reduces creek channel erosion.

You are encouraged to stop-by the District offices, located at 21040 Marshall Street, to tour the new landscape and learn more about how you can create a bay-friendly garden. The landscape was designed and constructed by Four Dimensions of Oakland and funding assistance was provided by the Bay-Friendly Landscaping and Gardening Program.

First quarter drawing winners, Randy and Kari Nelson, were rewarded with a gift certificate to Don Jose’s Mexican Restaurant for creatively composting.

Have you “gone beyond the pail” but haven’t had a chance to bring your pail to CVSD for your chance to win? There is still time to participate. The “Pail Bring-Back Program” will continue through August 15th, with dinner-for-two drawings to be held May 16th and August 16th.

Castro Valley Elementary School Food Scrap Recycling Program Kick-Off

(2/16/06)

Castro Valley Elementary has teamed up with Castro Valley Sanitary District and StopWaste.Org to develop a food scrap recycling program. The program began on Monday, February 13th, with a kick-off event hosted by San Francisco based clown and acrobatics quartet, Circus Center. The quartet performed an informative, high-energy, and entertaining demonstration of food scrap recycling incorporating a strong message of environmental awareness. They also assisted students with the recycling process during their lunch hour. Students were anxious to participate in the program and were excited that their school was becoming more environmentally friendly. One fifth-grader noted, “I think it’s important for us to not waste stuff, even food.”
Castro Valley residents have been participating in curbside food scrap recycling since 2001. Extending the program to include Castro Valley’s schools was a logical next step; one that will save Castro Valley Elementary an estimated $2000 annually.

Got Cans and Bottles?

(2/16/06)

Select Street Cans Receive Recycling Pyramids

In 2005, 60% of the beverage containers purchased in California were recycled. The remaining 40% found final resting places on roadsides and in landfills, but things are looking up for cans and bottles in Castro Valley!
Utilizing Department of Conservation grant funds, Castro Valley Sanitary District (CVSD) installed ten (10) recycling pyramids on select street cans located on Castro Valley Boulevard and Redwood Road. The pyramids, made of 65% minimum recycled content stainless steel, hold up to forty (40) beverage containers and resist rust and weathering. The street can recycling pyramid pilot program, intended to increase beverage container recycling in the downtown area, will be tracked and reviewed for possible future program expansion.

So if you are away from your home’s recycling bin, recycle beverage containers in one (1) of ten (10) new street can recycling pyramids! To provide program feedback, please contact michelle@cvsan.org or (510) 537-0987.

Stop Junk Mail - Here''s How

(1/18/06)

Junk mail is a waste. It’s a huge waste of natural resources and time. Sure, you can recycle junk mail, but it is even better to stop getting it.

The average American home receives 1.5 trees in their mailbox in the form of unsolicited mail every year. That adds up to over 100 million trees cut down and over 28 billion gallons of water consumed to produce one year’s worth of this country’s junk mail. In fact, every year over $320 million of our tax dollars are wasted on disposal fees due to huge amounts of junk mail.

Castro Valley Sanitary District (CVSD) is working together with Bay Area Recycling Outreach Coalition (BayROC) and sponsoring the “Junk Mail Reduction Campaign.” The campaign consists of radio commercials, public service announcements, and articles asking Bay Area residents to make a special effort to help reduce the amount of junk mail that comes to their homes and offices.

You can take action to stop this waste by requesting a FREE Stop Junk Mail Kit. The Junk Mail Reduction Kit shows you how to get off junk mailing lists and keep new junk mail from finding its way to your mailbox. The Kit also provides other important information on how to ensure that your name and address don’t get traded, rented, or sold to companies who send you unwanted mail.

Go online to www.StopJunkMail.orgor call toll-free, 877-STOPWASTE (786-7927) and request the FREE Stop Junk Mail Kit.

Portable Recycling Containers Available from Sanitary District

(1/13/06)

Are you a community organization seeking to raise money and help protect the environment? In an effort to further promote recycling, Castro Valley Sanitary District (CVSD) has utilized Department of Conservation grant funds to purchase portable recycling containers for donation to community groups. The District is accepting applications from organizations within the District, such as church groups and sports leagues, interested in receiving a donation of portable recycling containers.

To date, CVSD has donated Clearstream Recyclers to the Castro Valley Youth Soccer League (CVYSL) as well as New Life Christian Church. By taking collected cans and bottles to local buy-back centers, these organizations have both raised money and protected the environment.

Don’t miss your opportunity to take advantage of this unique offer. Supplies are limited and will be distributed on a first come, first served basis. Some restrictions apply.

Interested groups may pick up applicationsat CVSD, 21040 Marshall Street, Castro Valley, CA 94546 or download here. For more information, contact (510) 537-0987.
