Clothing Reuse

Don't toss old clothing into the garbage -- donate them to be re-worn, reused or recycled.  A couple of clothing reuse boxes are located in Castro Valley for convenient drop-off:

1. SpeeDee Oil Change & Tune Up, 3940 Castro Valley Blvd. The collected clothes are sold wholesale on the used clothes market (domestically or to Central and South America). Visit the Campus California TG website for more information.

2. 4026 Castro Valley Blvd. (parking lot near Center St.).  The drop-off box collects textiles and shoes of all kinds, regardless of condition.  Trendy or vintage items are sold to thrift stores, then "graders" sort the remaining items into hundreds of categories.  From there, clothes may end up in Africa, or clothes that are too stained or torn may be reused for rags or made into carpet padding.  Visit the USAgain website for more information.

3. Goodwill, 893 West A St., Hayward.  The sales of donations help fund job training programs, employment placement services and other community-based programs for people who have disabilities, lack education or job experience, or face employment challenges.  Visit the Goodwill website for more information.

Or, give used clothes a second chance by taking them to a local thrift store. Visit the StopWaste.Org Recycling Guide for locations.
