Davis Street Material Recovery and Transfer Station

Waste Management of Alameda County operates one of the most sophisticated material recovery facilities (MRF) in the country. Located on the former Oyster Bay Landfill at the west end of Davis Street in San Leandro, Davis Street accepts up to 5,600 tons of materials per day to recycle, compost, or transfer as trash to the Altamont Landfill in Livermore.

Davis Street features the following recovery facilities:

Appliance/Electronics/Mattress/Tire Drop Off – The public can bring these items for recycling. There is a processing fee except for television and computer monitors, which are free to recycle.

Dry Waste/Construction & Demolition (C&D) MRF  - The first certified high-diversion C&D facility in Alameda County, it recovers clean lumber, metal, concrete, cardboard, paper and more for recycling.

Organics Transfer Building – The first LEED Gold industrial building in San Leandro, the Organics Transfer Building collects yard trimmings and commercial and residential food scraps for composting at our Covered Aerobic Static Pile (CASP) facility in Marin County as well as by third-party composters in the central valley.

Public Drop Off -  This dedicated space allows the public to drop off construction debris for recycling, yard trimmings for composting and trash for transfer to the landfill.

ReUse Drop Off – Working with St. Vincent de Paul, we collect boxes, CDs, VHS tapes, shoes, purses and more for donation to charity.

Davis Street doesn’t just collect materials to recycle, compost or landfill, it also provides a way for customers to close the loop on their yard trimmings, food scraps and clean lumber debris, by stocking compost and mulch to nourish local gardens.

WM EarthCare Landscape Center – Conveniently located at the Davis Street entrance, the WM EarthCare Landscape Center provides Homegrown Compost approved for organic farming application, mulch from recycled, clean construction wood and soil blends. Residential Single Stream Materials Recycling Facility

At a cost of just over $9 million, the new state-of-the-art residential single-stream recycling center is the most modern facility in operation on the West Coast. It is staffed by two shifts every day and processes up to 400 tons of recyclables per day. Today, the facility processes the recycling for 12 different Bay Area jurisdictions including Alameda and Contra Costa Counties.

Construction & Demolition Materials Recycling Facility

As both cities and rural areas undergo urban development, demolition contractors routinely demolish structures every day resulting in thousands of tons of metals and other construction materials that need to be processed and ultimately made into new products. Today, Davis Street processes 350 tons of this material every day, diverting material that was once destined for our landfill to recyclers who in turn create new products. The facility has earned the ONLY C&D MRF certification in the county and diverts up to 50% of the cardboard, paper, wood, metal, concrete and plastics from construction sites.

Organics Programs

Davis Street processes in excess of 550 tons of organics per day – residential and commercial food waste, green waste and wood. Materials are captured and then processed for re-use in a variety of ways including: 440 tons of residential and commercial food and green waste are turned into organic compost and other landscaping essentials for residential and commercial landscaping companies in the Bay Area every day; and 70 tons of wood waste per day are turned into biomass fuel, fiber board and mulch.

We’re closing the loop and helping green-thumbed customers keep their gardens healthy and productive. Davis Street’s trucks bring green waste, mixed with residential food waste, to compost facilities every day. On the return trip, we bring back organic compost ready for your gardening projects. The public is welcome to come to our Garden Center, which is open 6 days a week, Monday – Saturday.

Products

Davis Street's Garden Center features several products produced from locally-generated materials.

Grover's Wonder Grow is the result of Alameda county's green bins. Your yard trimmings and food waste is composted at their Vernalis facility using 100% organic processes, and brought back for a rich soil amendment to your garden.

ZBest's Smart Grow comes from Alameda county's commercial food waste efforts. Restaurants and event venues across Alameda, Contra Costa and other Northern California counties send material for compost at their Gilroy site. There it's composted using Ag Bag technology. The resulting soil amendment is ideal for commercial and landscaping applications.

We have 3 colors of colored mulch: Red, Brown and Black. These are the results of wood recycling efforts at Davis Street.

Also available at the Garden Center: Deco Bark, Redwood String and Playground Chips.
