A Successful 2019 Earth Day: Clean-Up & Recycles Day Event!

Earth Day Clean-Up

The weather was somewhat cool but otherwise beautiful for CVSan’s annual Earth Day Clean-Up event on Saturday, April 13th.

Over 630 volunteers at 12 Castro Valley schools and five public sites participated in the 17th annual Clean-Up.  Volunteers cleared 50 cubic yards of plant debris to be composted and abated 1 cubic yard of litter from Castro Valley streets, parks, schools, and creeks.  Volunteers enjoyed free breakfast and coffee provided by CVSan, Alameda County Supervisor Nate Miley, and Karin Johnson Specialty Cakes and Pastries.  Other event sponsors include Pete’s ACE Hardware, Hayward Area Recreation and Park District, East Bay Regional Park District, Alameda County Public Works Agency, and Waste Management of Alameda County, Inc.

Recycles Day and Compost Give-Away

CVSan presented its 18th Recycles Day event and Compost Give-Away on Saturday, April 13th at Canyon Middle School.  Over the course of six and a half hours, over 1,500 CVSan residents and businesses showed their spirit and environmental responsibility by participating in the event.

Attendees recycled 4,500 pounds of sensitive documents, 89 mattresses, 175 gallons used cooking oil, and 35,040 pounds of e-waste.  More than 5,300 1-cubic foot bags of compost were distributed and up to 1,200 cubic yards of construction and demolition debris will be recycled for free from the 600 vouchers provided.

Since 1999, CVSan has been coordinating April Earth Day events for Castro Valley. From the early days of the Festival and 5K Fun Run to the Clean-Up and Recycles Day, it’s been our pleasure to serve the community each year by presenting these environmental efforts.

While Earth Day is every day at CVSan, our “Earth Day Clean-Up and Recycles Day” event brings our community together each year through organized projects, breakfast, tools, mulch, compost, and other materials for 500 to 1,000 volunteers.  Many Castro Valley schools and their families, parents, students, and school staff chip in to beautify their campuses, and community members enhance our beautiful parks.  Our Earth Day events continue one of CVSan’s Visions Statements to practice environmental stewardship to protect our resources.

Check back on this web page in early 2020 for details on CVSan’s Earth Day Clean-Up 2020.
