Other Battery Disposal Options

Because of the toxic chemicals that can leak from batteries that end up in a landfill, as of February 8, 2006, it is against the law to throw any battery (including household batteries) into the trash.

Single-family residents and multi-family residents with blue recycling cart service may participate in Castro Valley Sanitary District’s new curbside battery recycling program starting May 1, 2009. Place used dry cell household batteries in a sealed clear plastic bag on top of your blue recycling cart on your regular collection day.

Batteries may be taken to the Hayward Household Hazardous Waste facility at 2091 West Winton Avenue, Hayward, CA. Visit the website for directions, a schedule of drop-off days and hours, and to download the Waste Delivery Form.
