polystyrene containers

Starting January 1, 2016, an Alameda County Ordinance requires restaurants and establishments that serve food — no longer give out polystyrene* foam (commonly referred to as styrofoam) serveware and containers.  Instead, those that sell food will be providing compostable, recyclable, or resuable serveware and containers.  Restaurant patrons can help by bringing your own containers to for takeout.  If you already do this, thanks & keep it up!

*Note: according to the Ordinance, “styrene, a component of polystyrene, is a known hazardous substance and is classified as a possible human carcinogen by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (“EPA”).  Polystyrene commonly used in food packaging is not biodegradable and is a common environmental pollutant.”
