Altamont Landfill and Liquefied Natural Gas Tour(5/24/10) Castro Valley Sanitary District (CVSD) Board members, Community Advisory Committee (CAC) members, and staff toured the Altamont Landfill and Resource Recovery Facility and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plant on Tuesday, May 18, 2010. The visit included a tour around the landfill, facility, and operations of capturing landfill gas. At the Altamont Landfill, new technology is now converting materials placed in the garbage into LNG. The organic materials from Castro Valley’s garbage that reach the Altamont Landfill degrade and produce methane gas. The production facility transforms that gas into LNG and uses the recovered landfill gas to fuel their large fleet of natural gas recycling, organics, and garbage collection vehicles throughout California, including Castro Valley. In addition to reducing our dependence on fossil fuel, the process will also reduce carbon dioxide emissions by an estimated 30,000 tons a year. The landfill is now leading the way in reducing greenhouse gases by 85 percent in using captured methane to generate “green power”. The “green power” generated provides approximately 8,000 homes electricity each day. The Altamont Landfill utilizes state-of-the-art liners, leachate collection, and groundwater monitoring and gas control systems. Designed and operated under strict regulated procedures, there are highly effective operational procedures implemented to ensure an ecologically sensitive environment. The facility is continually working on protecting their neighbors and the greater community. The Altamont Landfill and Resource Recovery Facility is located in the moderately remote area of the windmill- dotted hills of the Altamont Pass. Compromising approximately 2,170 acres of land with 1,000 of those acres dedicated to preserved open space, the Altamont Landfill is part of the largest and most sophisticated network of landfills in the country.
