Multi-Family Community Recognition

Starting soon, multi-family communities will be able to apply for the recognition they deserve for going above and beyond to reduce waste! Please read below to find out more.

What is the Green Neighbor Community Recognition Program?
  • The Green Neighbor Community Recognition Program rewards multi-family communities for participating in efforts in the 4Rs categories Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rot. Multi-family communities that go above and beyond towards CVSan’s Path to Zero Waste are recognized with a certificate, CVSan publicity and tenant and property manager awards.
How does someone apply for the award?
  • The property owner/manager should complete and submit the Green Neighbor Community Recognition Program Application (available soon) to CVSan via hand delivery, mail, fax, or email to contact@cvsan.org.
  • CVSan staff will contact the property owner/manager and perform a site assessment at a multi-family community. Some documents will be requested for verification of 4Rs items on the Green Neighbor Community Recognition Program Application.
What are some of the qualifications to be awarded?
  • The multi-family community must meet criteria listed in the 4Rs categories of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rot to qualify for an award. Refer to the Green Neighbor Community Recognition Program Application for the complete list of items, but the following are some of the required items for each component:
    • Reduce
      • Email or give StopFoodWaste’s Produce Storage Guide to tenants once a year.
      • Email or give Zero Waste newsletter content (which CVSan provides) to tenants twice a year.
    • Reuse
      • Schedule and educate tenants on Bulky and Reuse Pick-Ups once a year.
      • Promote reuse sales and donation, instead of throwing away (e.g. Freecycle, Craigslist, NextDoor, Goodwill, etc.) once a year. Newsletter or mailbox flyers are acceptable.
    • Recycle
      • Subscribe to the recycling service through Alameda County Industries (ACI).
      • Achieved a 50% recycling (and organics) rate or better by volume/service level.
      • Distribute recycling information to tenants twice a year (Mandatory Ordinance–required).
    • Rot
      • Subscribe to organics service through ACI and compost food scraps.
      • Request from CVSan and give food scrap recycling pails (as needed) once a year.
      • Distribute organics information to tenants twice a year (Mandatory Ordinance-required).
What does a multi-family community receive once certified?
  • In addition to an Award Certificate and sign, the multi-family community will be listed on the CVSan website and featured in CVSan publicity. As well, two awards of monetary value are included with certification, the Property Manager Award and the Tenant Award.
What is the Property Manager Award?
  • The Property Manager Award, which cannot exceed a value of $475, consists of the following service and supply options for the Castro Valley multi-family property:
    • Credit for construction and demolition debris service.
    • FREE pick up of extra mattresses.
    • FREE pick up of extra “white goods” such as refrigerators.
    • FREE mulch delivered for on-site landscaping use.
    • FREE compost delivered for on-site landscaping use.
    • FREE biobags (compostable plastic bags) for indoor food scrap recycling.
  What is the Tenant Award?
  • The tenant award, which cannot exceed a value of $475 per multi-family community, consists of gift cards (to Castro Valley businesses) for each tenant.
How does a community receive a larger Property Manager Award or Tenant Award?
  • The awards are based on community size (in units) and participation. Larger community size and greater participation in the 4Rs categories, resulting in higher recycling and organics levels, will calculate to larger value awards. Awards will be given on a first-come, first-served, basis.
Once someone applies, how soon will they receive their Property Manager Award?
  • The certification process for the Green Neighbor Community Recognition Program Application will take 8-10 weeks to process.
  • Once approved, the Property Manager will choose one or more of the options for awards shown on the application (total value cannot exceed total value awarded).
    • CVSan staff will work with ACI to schedule and determine the value of service awards requested. CVSan staff will order and deliver biobags when selected.
Once someone applies, how soon will they receive their Tenant Award?
  • The certification process for the Green Neighbor Community Recognition Program Application will take 8-10 weeks to process.
  • Once approved, the property manager will let CVSan know how many tenants are at the multi-family property. The property manager will communicate what gift cards they would like (total value cannot exceed the total value awarded). CVSan will mail gift cards to each tenant unit in the multi-family community.
How long is the multi-family property certified?
  • Certification is eligible for renewal and award every three years upon expiration.
  What is the recertification process?
  • CVSan staff will remind all certified members of the Green Neighbor Community Recognition Program every year during their certification, of items they will need to maintain in order to obtain recertification after three years.
  • CVSan staff will notify property managers 12 months before their certification is up to begin the recertification process and to confirm they have continued to meet program requirements listed on the Green Neighbor Community Recognition Program Application.  For recertification, the same application process will be used, with a note that the application is for recertification.
