Event Greening
What Does CVSan Have to Offer Events?
Castro Valley Sanitary District (CVSan) promotes the 4Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rot) to the entire community, and when the 4Rs are utilized at events, we help conserve resources and save money. CVSan staff can provide expertise on event greening. As well, a variety of supplies to help with event greening are available at CVSan. What will be Collected and How?
CVSan offers recycling and organics (compost) collection services at events through its contract with Alameda County Industries (discounts and donations may be available). Containers, signs, and bags are available for Castro Valley events, non-profits, businesses, and schools. CVSan staff can assist with planning for the right containers and signage. For supplies, please complete a Donation and Supply Request Form.
CVSan recommends setting up “stations” with carts or bins and signage at events by grouping together a recycling, organics, and garbage container at every station. A single container becomes garbage, no matter what the sign says.
What is Required of Events?
In compliance with state law SB 1383 and the local Organics Reduction and Recycling Ordinance, events are subject to the requirements for businesses. Events must provide recycling and organics containers next to garbage containers and educate patrons on what goes where. Events must also contract with a food recovery organization for any extra edible food (that has not been served) to donate for local food assistance agencies. How Important is Event 4Rs Planning?
Whether it’s SB 1383 compliance, recycling and organics station setup, vendor greening, or volunteer help, planning is important. CVSan and Alameda County Industries staff are available to perform a free site assessment for your event. Staff can guide you through the process, including your event’s potential to prevent waste, and any donations, loans or training to help you implement the 4Rs at your event. Other Event Greening Resources in Castro Valley
Castro Valley Marketplace Paperless Parties Kits. Castro Valley Marketplace (CVM) provides reusable dishware like forks, butter knives and spoons (metal), plus plates, cups, and bowls (recycled plastic) to community events. As of summer 2023, CVM has about 40 coffee mugs and can offer about 150 full cutlery sets, with a fun mix and match of items being common. The kits come with basic signage, and a couple return bins so diners can properly sort their dirty items after use.
Those checking out the reusable dishware kits are encouraged to wash the dishes themselves, however CVM does offer washing services for about $0.10 - $0.15 cents per item. CVM requests at least one week notice before an event and customers can select whether they want to pick up/drop off the items from Castro Valley Natural Grocery or Alameda Natural Grocery.
