Zero Waste Week

Castro Valley Sanitary District (CVSan) hosted its Fifth Annual Zero Waste Week for the community in early February!

Wednesday, February 5th – Community Tree Fruit Gleaning!
CVSan kicked off Zero Waste Week with the Tree Fruit Gleaning event, which was a huge success! A total of 48 members of the community gleaned over 1,947 pounds of oranges, tangerines, grapefruit, and lemons which were donated to Faith Lutheran Church Community Food Pantry and Resurrection Greek Orthodox Church Food Pantry.

Thursday, February 6th – Zero Waste Cooking Workshop
A hands-on zero waste cooking demonstration was led by Zero Waste Chef Anne-Marie Bonneau. During the workshop, 20 participants learned about preventing wasted food while cooking and helped prepare and sample delicious recipes which included kimchi fried rice.

Friday, February 7th – Movie Night – The True Cost

At a screening of The True Cost at the Castro Valley Library, 19 community members learned about the impact of fast fashion on the environment, as well as the unsafe working conditions many garment workers endure. Following the film, CVSan staff led a short discussion on the topic and shared resources about reuse and CVSan’s textile recycling program. The True Cost DVD is available for check out at the Alameda County Library if you would like to view it on your own.

Saturday, February 8th – Fixit Clinic with Bike Repair and Clothing Swap!
Over 90 participants attended the Fixit Clinic held at the Castro Valley Library! Fifteen items were fixed prolonging the usable lifespan of an estimated 105 lbs. of consumer products. As well, twenty bicycles were repaired with the help of Bay Area Bike Mobile and Bad Business Model Bikes. Thank you to everyone that participated, especially our volunteer coaches that so graciously donated their time and knowledge in the spirit of fixing!
