Sending Less to the Landfill is what we all need to strive for. Castro Valley Sanitary District (CVSan) has a goal of Zero Waste (90 percent or more diversion) by the year 2029. Look below for the progress the CVSan community has made and keep up the good work!
The Path to Zero Waste
“Zero Waste is a goal that is ethical, economical, efficient and visionary, to guide people in changing their lifestyles and practices to emulate sustainable natural cycles, where all discarded materials are designed to become resources for others to use. Zero Waste means designing and managing products and processes to systematically avoid and eliminate the volume and toxicity of waste and materials, conserve and recover all resources, and not burn or bury them. Implementing Zero Waste will eliminate all discharges to land, water or air that are a threat to planetary, human, animal or plant health.” (Zero Waste International Alliance on August 12, 2009) CVSan has long practiced and promoted the 4Rs (Reduce – Reuse – Recycle – Rot) to reduce waste and conserve resources in Castro Valley. CVSan’s Zero Waste Department has developed innovative and award-winning programs to educate the community because everyone’s participation is needed to reduce waste and increase diversion.
CVSan’s Zero Waste Strategic Plan
In 2014, CVSan published the Zero Waste Strategic Plan to envision and document their recently adopted goal of zero waste by 2029. The Zero Waste Strategic Plan is integral to CVSan’s Path to Zero Waste and is a living document that highlights significant achievements, partnerships within the Castro Valley community, data on the reduction of materials sent to landfills, and information about award-winning recycling and organics diversion programs and outreach. Over the past 15 years, CVSan’s Board and staff have worked together to create and implement a transformative vision, that strives to strategically work with single and multi-family residential communities, commercial business communities, and school communities. CVSan has provided leadership in environmental education with a practical hands-on approach to program development and implementation. CVSan’s Zero Waste Strategic Plan explores the past, present, and future of CVSan’s Path to Zero Waste.
Sections of CVSan’s Zero Waste Strategic Plan include Background & Stakeholder Process; Evaluation of Current Policies, Programs, Partnership & Facilities; Service Opportunities Analysis; Zero Waste Strategy Options; and Economic Analysis & Implementation Plan.
