Shopping Online

Online shopping seems to be more popular than ever. While it is always great to be able to buy local, sustainable options in your area, if you cannot find the items you and your family need in bulk and locally sourced, online shopping may be a better option for you. Especially if you are looking for products to help you start your zero waste lifestyle, online may be the only option for you.

There are many online sites where you can find sturdy, reusable products to start your zero waste journey. One site has a fun way to get you on the path to zero waste: Mighty Nest has a monthly subscription called the Mighty Fix, and for $10 a month, they will mail you a surprise item such as wool dryer balls, reusable dish towels, or even beeswax wrap (to replace your plastic wrap). Trash is For Tossers is another site that has great options for reusables.

In addition to shopping for your zero waste journey, The ‘Going Zero Waste’ blog has some waste reducing suggestions for general shopping online:

  • Try requesting a plastic free shipment and make notes to the seller. Ask for paper tape and brown paper instead.
  • If your item still comes with plastic wrap, try to recycle it as best as you can (along with the brown paper and cardboard box).
  • If your item is shipped with foam peanuts or bubble wrap, try taking it all to a UPS Store or local shipping store to reuse them.
