CVSan Has Been Composting Food Scraps Since 2002 and We’re Celebrating!
Thank you Castro Valley for supporting waste reduction and composting your food scraps in your green carts. Castro Valley Sanitary District (CVSan) was one of the early pioneers in starting food scrap recycling in the early 2000s and the community jumped on board. Food scrap recycling has helped the community significantly reduce waste sent to landfill and it has provided many benefits to the community, such as providing compost back in return.

What is compost?
Compost is a natural soil amendment which is created from the materials CVSan customers put in their organics carts. Every spring and summer, CVSan gives back thousands of bags of compost to the community at the Recycles Day event. This compost is made from food scraps, food-soiled paper, and plant debris from your green cart! Find out more about compost, how it’s made, and all the benefits to the community.
